Junior Bee Club
"The kids basically did everything to install two new queens into two NUC boxes and then installed a package into a deep hive body. Since they had a chance to practice, they knew what to do. I basically talked them through it, asking questions along the way, and then asked them, "What do we do next....?", and then had them do it. The only challenge a couple kids had was when they were installing the new queens into the NUCs that already had bees. These couple of kids were a little nervous with all the bees on the brood frames, but they hung in there and they were troopers. Also, I had only one size xxs gloves. The other small gloves were a bit too big, which made it a little difficult for the kids to handle the frames. However, they really liked working with the bees. One of the kids told me he was afraid of bees before coming to the bee club, but now he wasn't. It was great. Five of the kids do not have bees and have never been this close to so many. The two older girls age 12 and 14, who are sisters, have become very interested in bees and beekeeping. Their mom bought them suits and gloves. The oldest is always asking me questions. I love it! When we were all through, I congratulated them all, saying, "You are now beekeepers!" and celebrated with some lemonade." says Michele Donnelly
The Junior Bee Club is for kids in grades K-6. The club meets at the same time and place as the regularly scheduled Treasure Valley Beekeepers Club meetings. The kids learn the FUNdamentals of beekeeping and of our beloved honey bees. The Junior Bee Club teaches kids all about honey bees through science, nutrition, their role in our natural world, and how they as junior beekeepers can help them. Activities may include craft projects, science experiments, field trips to an apiary, extracting honey and more.
